FarCry 2 - XBox 360 Game

Rating: ★★★★½

Review by Gamer Outfit

Far Cry® 2 is a true open-world FPS where every decision you make affects the outcome of the game. The first sequel to the award-winning franchise takes you to one of the most beautiful and hostile environments in the world - AFRICA. You are a gun for hire, trapped in a war-torn African state, stricken with malaria and forced to make deals with corrupt warlords. Your mission is to hunt down and kill The Jackal. This evil arms dealer has been perpetuating this conflict for years, wreaking havoc on the land an all of its innocent people. Run, swim, drive, fly, shoot, fight and smash your way through over 50km² of open world. Beware though, sometimes the hunter can become the hunted.

Bottom Line

  • Amazing Graphics, fun single player experience

I Put the Mature 17+ Rating graphic right here up front so that no one let's their children get a hold of FarCry 2.  Make no mistake about it, this is an adult's only game given the amount of violence and bloodshed present.  Given that, I had a blast playing FarCry 2 and recommend it to any reasonable and sane adult who is looking for a great first person shooter experience in single player mode.

In FarCry 2 you play a character in the war torn nation of Africa and must defeat the arms dealer that has been supplying all sides of the conflict (as said in the quote up top.)  You play the game through the view of the main protagonist and get to play with a variety of weapons including but not limited to pistols, shotguns, rocket launchers, flame throwers, and sniper rifles.  You must find ammunition and health packs along the way as well to keep the action going.  If you run out of ammo you are left with your not-so-trusty machete.

The game mixes quests in with a FPS game by letting you choose missions to take from many places on the map (indicated by exclamation marks.)  You can earn faction rating for completing certain missions along the way which goes towards varying goals and rewards.  Another example of a kinder/friendlier environment are the weapon shops placed around the map.  At the weapon shops you can spend the blood diamonds you collect (for finishing missions) on weapons that are permanently available next door to each weapon shop.  You can only carry a few weapons at a time though and will find yourself using old weapons from people you kill.  The older weapons can jam and cause a pause in the firefight which is why it's best to use new weapons from the store whenever possible.

Graphically FarCry 2 couldn't be much better.  It uses the game engine from Crysis and looks amazing on the PC, XBox 360, and the PS3.  Physics are implemented to a degree but don't have as much as an effect on gameplay as they did in Half Life 2.  It is nice to see familiar objects in the world too such as exploding barrels (who puts those there anyway?) and ammo crates that explode in a hail of bullets.  The sounds are great along with the cut-scenes that offer sub-titles and really carry the story.

FarCry 2 only gets a score of 85, which is great here at Gamer Outfit, mainly because it offers nothing really new to the world.  It has great graphics, a good storyline, good enemy AI, etc. though and is worth the price of admission.  If you are looking for a great mission experience in a FPS game then go out and get FarCry 2 today.

You can read about it on on the Microsoft Marketplace.
